Transhumanism's Drive to Create the Posthuman
When transhumanists speak of the concept of human enhancement, they have in mind their plan to use technological advancements, most of which do not yet exist, to accomplish two things. First, transhumanists believe that the human race is nothing more than the latest stage of evolution. Moreover, transhumanists believe that they will one day be able to both control and accelerate the evolutionary progress of human beings. This progress will be facilitated through the application of technology which should serve to accomplish the evolutionary progress of the human animal.
“I was born human, but it was an accident of fate . . . Humanity can change itself but hopefully it will be an individual choice. Those who want to stay human can and those who want to evolve into something much more powerful with greater capabilities can. There is no way I want to stay a mere human." Kevin Warwick
Second, transhumanists believe that the ultimate stage of human evolutionary progress will be the eventual creation of the posthuman. In the transhumanist vision, the posthuman will be a new species of hominid that is created from the existing canvas of extant human beings albeit with a sufficient amount of applied technological advancements to be considered no longer human, but posthuman. This is the endgame for the advocates of human enhancement: to become a completely new species through the process of evolution enabled by the application of advanced technologies to human biology.
