Transhumanism's Drive Toward Creating the Posthuman
Perhaps the most lofty goal of transhumanist philosophy is that humanity will eventually achieve what transhumanists call the posthuman. The posthuman is neither human nor transhuman, but rather is the final stage of human evolution that can be imagined at present: a realized disembodied intellect that has been relieved of the limitations of human biology to exist in a digital state.
To achieve this hoped-for disembodied state, transhumanists propose to upload the human mind to super computers in order to preserve human consciousness beyond physical death. This may sound like science fantasy, but technoprogressives are perfectly serious about their aspirations to bring about this biological-cybernetic evolutionary transformation for humanity.
"I think the brain is like a program in the mind. So it’s theoretically possible to copy the brain on to a computer and so provide a form of life after death.”
Stephen Hawking
At present, the technology to enable such an evolutionary leap from extant human biology to a state of computerized consciousness does not exist, but transhumanists hope that technological advancements will one day allow humanity to preserve the memories, desires, experiences, and hopes of each individual in a digital platform that will ultimately constitute eternal life.
